Transformer Handling from Core Assembly to Dispatch

A transformer handling crane lifts and transfers transformer components or complete units during manufacture, repair and loading. The load changes as the transformer is assembled, so one nameplate weight does not describe every lifting operation.

Operation Our crane arrangement What it provides
Core and coil assembly Overhead lifting with a beam or attachment matched to the assembly fixture. Access to the designated lifting points while keeping rigging clear of windings, leads and insulation.
Active-part tanking and untanking Overhead crane with selected loaded approach speed and suitable hook height. Vertical coverage from the assembly stand to the tanking position, including clearance above the tank opening.
Tank, cover and accessory handling Separately rated main or auxiliary hoist, or a dedicated assembly crane. A lifting arrangement suited to each component without occupying the heavy hoist for every smaller task.
Test-bay transfer Overhead coverage coordinated with test equipment, access zones and parking positions. Movement into and out of the test position under the facility’s de-energized handling procedure.
Finished-transformer loading Overhead or gantry coverage reaching the agreed trailer, rail or transfer position. A defined handover point between factory lifting and onward transport.

Select Capacity, Hook Arrangement and Tanking Clearance

A load schedule for every production stage

We size the crane from the heaviest permitted suspended package in its working area. Active-part, empty-tank, shipping and oil-filled weights are treated as separate lifting cases. The schedule includes the accessories fitted at that stage and the beam, slings and other gear carried below the hook. Transformer kVA or MVA alone does not determine crane capacity.

Illustrative capacity check: an 82 t transformer + a 6 t lifting beam + 2 t of slings and shackles = a 90 t suspended package. A 75 t hoist cannot cover this package. A 100 t main-hoist configuration is a candidate for engineering review; duty, clearances and the complete lifting arrangement still govern the final selection.

A clearance drawing for tanking and untanking

Clearance item What our arrangement drawing establishes
Vertical tanking envelope Active-part height, tank-rim elevation, required clearance above the opening, beam and sling height, and the required upper hook position.
Horizontal approach and transfer Hook coverage over the assembly stand and tank, clearances from columns and equipment, and the travel path between stations.
Building and maintenance space Crane envelope below the roof and services, runway elevation and access to the hoisting and travel equipment.
Dispatch handover Trailer, rail or transfer position, loading height and the hook reach available at that position.

Individual hook loads for two-point handling

We establish lifting-point spacing, centre of gravity, individual hook reactions and permitted operating combinations before choosing the mechanisms. A 100/20 t crane has separately rated main and auxiliary hoists; their ratings are not automatically added. For coordinated lifting, the offer states the operating modes and the specified monitoring and fault response.

Compare Transformer Handling Crane Configurations

Configuration Suitable handling task Configuration basis
Single-girder overhead crane Smaller transformer components, tooling and suitable general assembly work. LDA catalogue family: 1–20 t. Selection also considers duty, headroom and working coverage.
Double-girder overhead crane Active-part handling, tanking and heavier complete transformers. QD catalogue examples include 75/20 t and 100/20 t; higher-capacity families extend to 400/80–450/80 t.
Double-trolley overhead crane Components requiring two separated lifting positions or engineered orientation control. Individual trolley loads, spacing, coordinated operation and acceptable hook-height difference.
Double-girder gantry crane Ground-supported staging, outdoor handling and loading areas. Rail foundations, vehicle clearance, lifting coverage, wind exposure and ground-level access.
Automated overhead handling Repeated movements between defined production or storage stations. Load identification, attachment engagement, positioning, station signals and recovery modes.

Catalogue designations identify available base platforms. The transformer application determines the final span, lift, duty, controls and permitted load combinations.

Transformer Process Options and Their Acceptance

Handling requirement Configuration we offer Delivered verification
Controlled final lowering Hoisting mechanism, drive, brake and feedback arrangement selected for the loaded approach task. Specified speed and stopping behaviour demonstrated under the agreed load and test conditions.
Two-point lifting Separately rated hoists, selected hook spacing, coordinated operating mode and required position or load feedback. Independent and coordinated motions, relative hook-height monitoring and specified fault responses checked during acceptance.
Exposed windings and insulation Selected lubrication containment, debris guards, suitable finishes and access for cleaning. Selected protective provisions identified on the equipment and checked against the technical specification.
Transformer lifting interface Beam or attachment geometry developed around the approved lifting-point drawing. Rated capacity, attachment identification and the agreed attachment documentation supplied within its contracted scope.
Test-bay coordination Parking positions, travel zones and contracted interfaces with the test facility. Zone and interface functions checked with the facility under its approved commissioning procedure.

Transformer lifting points follow the equipment manufacturer’s approved drawing. Tank-cover points are assessed for the load they are designed to carry; radiators, bushings and pipework are not used as substitute lifting points. Cleanroom classification and any hazardous-area requirement are addressed as separate process specifications.

Published Project Evidence in Power-Equipment Handling

Henan Mine Crane: two automated cranes for electrical-material handling

Henan Mine Crane reported a two-crane automation project for box-type substation equipment and power cables in July 2026. The published control arrangement uses VFD and PLC control, hoist encoders and Gray-bus positioning for bridge and trolley travel.

The reported functions include 3D scanning, visual inspection, automatic pickup, obstacle avoidance and anti-sway. The attachment uses detection switches, while WCS/WMS integration records material movements. This is a power-equipment logistics reference; transformer tanking loads and clearances are engineered for the separate manufacturing process.

Transformer-factory industry reference: Konecranes for Hitachi Energy

In February 2026, Konecranes announced an order for 24 overhead cranes at Hitachi Energy’s Ludvika transformer factory expansion: 12 S-series and 12 CXT cranes for a new 20,000 m² production building and test hall. Delivery and installation were scheduled for March–September 2026. The announcement identifies VFD motion, positioning controls and debris protection.

This third-party transformer-factory reference shows why production coverage, placement control and cleanliness are considered together in crane planning.

Transformer Handling Crane FAQs

What is a transformer handling crane?

A transformer handling crane lifts and transfers transformer components or complete units during manufacturing, repair and loading. Overhead cranes serve production bays, while gantry cranes can serve ground-supported staging or loading areas.

What crane capacity does my transformer need?

Capacity follows the actual suspended package at each handling stage, including the transformer or component, lifting beam, slings and other carried gear. Active-part, shipping and oil-filled weights may differ. kVA or MVA alone does not determine crane capacity.

Can the crane lower a core and coil assembly into its tank?

Yes. The crane can be configured for active-part tanking using the approved lifting points. The design checks loaded lowering performance, rigging height, tank opening, hook approaches and the complete clearance envelope.

Can two hoists lift one transformer together?

A coordinated arrangement can be engineered for approved two-point handling. Selection accounts for individual hook loads, spacing, centre of gravity, allowable height difference and fault response. Separate hoist ratings are not automatically additive.

Can you supply a crane for an existing transformer workshop?

Yes. We review the span, roof clearance, runway arrangement and production route, then provide crane reactions and interface data for the project’s structural assessment. The proposal identifies any required interface changes.

Is a standard overhead crane suitable above exposed windings?

The configuration must address the process cleanliness requirements. Lubrication containment, debris protection and cleaning access can be included. A general workshop crane is not automatically a certified cleanroom crane.

Do you supply cranes for factory loading or for one-time site unloading?

This supply scope covers permanent overhead and gantry cranes for manufacturing, repair and loading facilities. One-time unloading at a substation follows a separate site lifting and transport plan, which may use mobile cranes or specialist transfer equipment.

What is included in the crane package?

The base crane package comprises the structure, end carriages, trolley, lifting mechanism, hook and rope system, drives, controls and specified protection. Attachments, process options, runway equipment and site services are separately identified in the quotation.

What documents and support are supplied?

The delivery scope includes the agreed arrangement and interface information, inspection and test records, operating and maintenance instructions, electrical drawings and parts identification. Installation guidance, commissioning assistance, training and spares are identified by scope in the quotation.
