An overhead crane provides horizontal coverage across and along a working bay. The hoist performs vertical lifting; the trolley or travelling hoist moves across the bridge; the bridge end carriages move the complete crane along parallel runways. Controls, power distribution, brakes and protective devices coordinate these motions.

A hoist can operate independently on a fixed suspension point or monorail, but it becomes part of an overhead crane when installed on a travelling bridge system. Procurement specifications must therefore define both the lifting mechanism and the structure that carries it.
